Ask anyone how a problem got solved here and the answer is rarely a government office. It is a meeting. Somebody called people together, somebody spoke too long, somebody finally said the thing everyone was thinking, and a decision got made.
That habit is the island's quiet advantage. Towns that can still gather can still fix things: a drain, a school fee, a dispute, a funeral that nobody should pay for alone.
The risk now is not that we stop caring. It is that we scatter. Young people leave for Port Harcourt, Lagos, abroad. Newcomers arrive for work and never get invited into the circle. The room stays the same size while the town grows.
A good community platform should do one humble job: make the room bigger without making it colder. Everyone in, everyone heard, and the elders still respected.
