There is an old, quiet snobbery on this island and across Nigeria: a certificate is the plan, a trade is the fallback. It is time to retire it.
Look at who is hard to find when something breaks. A good electrician. A plumber who shows up. A tailor who finishes before Christmas. These people are busy, respected and usually paid well, because skill is scarce.
Add a phone to the mix and the picture improves further: a tradesperson who can be found, called and reviewed will out-earn one who depends on being remembered.
If you are young and deciding what to learn, learn something people will always need. If you are skilled, take on an apprentice. The island has more work than hands.
